Shallow firn cores, in addition to a near-basal ice core, were recovered in 2018 from the Quelccaya ice cap (5470 m a.s.l) in the Cordillera Vilcanota, Peru, and in 2017 from the Nevado Illimani glacier (6350 m a.s.l) in the Cordillera Real, Bolivia. The two sites are ~450 km apart. Despite meltwater percolation resulting from warming, particle-based trace element records (e.g. Fe, Mg, K) in the Quelccaya and Illimani shallow cores retain well-preserved signals. The firn core chronologies, established independently by annual layer counting, show a convincing overlap indicating the two records contain comparable signals and therefore capture similar regional scale climatology. Trace element records at a ~1–4 cm resolution provide past records of anthropogenic emissions, dust sources, volcanic emissions, evaporite salts and marine-sourced air masses. Using novel ultra-high-resolution (120 μm) laser technology, we identify annual layer thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 0.8 cm in a section of 2000-year-old radiocarbon-dated near-basal ice which compared to the previous annual layer estimates suggests that Quelccaya ice cores drilled to bedrock may be older than previously suggested by depth-age models. With the information collected from this study in combination with past studies, we emphasize the importance of collecting new surface-to-bedrock ice cores from at least the Quelccaya ice cap, in particular, due to its projected disappearance as soon as the 2050s.

Quaternary terraces and pediments along Ralston Creek and Clear Creek, near Golden, Colorado, are associated with Verdos, Slocum, Louviers, and Broadway Alluviums. Terrace deposits can be locally correlated on the basis of elevation and relict paleosols. The terrace sediments probably represent aggradation by braided streams flowing from glaciated drainage basins. Engineering hydraulic calculation procedures suggest that flood flows were 2–3 m deep on steep gradients (0.008–0.01). Discharges were as great as 1400 m3/sec, nearly an order of magnitude greater than modern flood discharges. The most useful paleohydraulic calculation techniques were found to be the dimensionless shear approach applied to stream competence and bedload function theory applied to stream capacity.

Summary
Summary
The Channeled Scabland comprises a regional anastomosing complex of overfit stream channels that were eroded by Pleistocene megaflooding into the basalt bedrock and overlying sediments of the Columbia Plateau and Columbia Basin regions of eastern Washington State, USA. Immense fan complexes were emplaced where sediment-charged water entered structural basins. The cataclysmic flooding produced macroforms eroded into the rock (coulees and trenched spur buttes) and sediment (streamlined hills and islands). Several types of depositional bars also are scaled to the channel widths. The erosional mesoforms (scaled to flow depth) include longitudinal grooves, butte-and-basin scabland, potholes, inner channels and cataracts. These make up an erosional sequence that is scaled to levels of velocity, power per unit area and depths achieved by the cataclysmic flooding. Giant current ‘ripples’ (dunes) developed in the coarse gravel bedload, and large-scale scour marks were formed around various flow obstacles, including rock buttes and very large boulders.
Introduction
The Channeled Scabland region (Figure 5.1) is that portion of the basaltic Columbia Plateau and Columbia Basin that was subjected to periodic cataclysmic flooding during the late Pleistocene, resulting in a distinctive suite of flood-related landforms. Bretz (1923a, pp. 577–578) defined ‘scablands’ as ‘lowlands diversified by a multiplicity of irregular and commonly anastomosing channels and rock basins eroded into basalt…’ The term was in local use in reference to chaotically eroded tracts of bare basalt which occur in relatively large channels that the floods cut through the loess cover on the plateau.

Megaflooding is the sudden discharge of exceptional volumes of water. Megafloods have significantly altered the terrain of Earth and Mars, and may have acted as triggers for climate change on these planets. Recently, research into megaflooding has made important advances: on Earth, real-time measurements of contemporary floods in Iceland complement research into older and larger terrestrial floods, while on Mars terabytes of data from several spacecraft orbiting that planet are dramatically revising our view of flooding there. Beginning with a historical overview of flood science, the book presents sections on morphology and mechanisms, flood sedimentology, and modelling, each illustrated with examples from Earth and Mars. By juxtaposing terrestrial and Martian research, this volume creates a unique synthesis to further our understanding of these enormous paleoflood events. It is an invaluable reference for researchers and students of hydrology, geomorphology, sedimentology and planetary science, as well as environmental and hydraulic engineers.

Summary
Summary
The outflow channels that emptied into Chryse Planitia provide the best evidence that great quantities of water once flowed on the Martian surface. Some channels were created when the cryosphere ruptured and ground-water discharged from chaos or from cavi along major fault zones. Some chaos formed on channel floors when fluvial erosion thinned the cryosphere, leading to catastrophic breakout of confined groundwater. These chaos can be used to estimate the cryosphere thickness, crustal heat flux and climate trends. At Iamuna Chaos the cryosphere was 700–1000 m thick when Ravi Vallis formed, indicating a cold, long-term climate similar to present-day Mars. The discovery of outflow channels at elevations >2500 m in Ophir Planum shows that Hesperian recharge likely occurred in upslope areas to the west (e.g. Sinai Planum, Tharsis highlands, Syria Planum). The larger circum-Chryse channels were carved by floods that issued directly from the ancestral canyons, which likely were smaller and less interconnected than today. A plausible mechanism for water release was catastrophic drainage of chasm lakes caused by the collapse of topographic barriers or ice-debris dams. We report evidence that a megaflood filled Capri Chasma and overtopped its eastern rim, carving two crossover channels and spectacular dry falls cataracts. This flooding may represent an initial outpouring of canyon lakes via a gateway in eastern Coprates Chasma. The recent discovery of hematite and abundant hydrated sulphates in the Valles Marineris canyons provides compelling evidence of a water-rich history.

Summary
Summary
After centuries of geological controversy it is now well established that the last major deglaciation of planet Earth involved huge fluxes of water from the wasting continental ice sheets, and that much of this water was delivered as floods of immense magnitude and relatively short duration. These late Quaternary megafloods, and the megafloods of earlier glaciations, had short-term peak flows, comparable in discharge to the more prolonged fluxes of ocean currents. (The discharges for both ocean currents and megafloods generally exceed one million cubic metres per second, hence the prefix ‘mega’.) Some outburst floods likely induced very rapid, short-term effects on Quaternary climates. The late Quaternary megafloods also greatly altered drainage evolution and the planetary patterns of water and sediment movement to the oceans. The recent discoveries of Mars missions have now documented the importance of megafloods to the geological evolution of that planet. As on Earth, the Martian megafloods seem to have influenced climate change.
Introduction
Up until the middle nineteenth century considerable progress was being made in scientific studies of the role of catastrophic flooding in the geological evolution of river valleys. While some of these studies invoked a kind of biblical catastrophism, much of the work merely employed hypotheses of immense floods because these inferences seemed to provide the best explanations for such features as scoured bedrock and accumulations of huge, water-transported boulders.

Summary
Introduction
The origin of fluvial valleys has been one of the great problems of science ever since the debates in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries over the role of cataclysmic events in the shaping of Earth's valleys. The famous founders of geology, including Hutton, Lyell, and Cuvier all participated in these great debates. It can be argued that geology emerged as a science because of the scientific reasoning that was applied to this problem (Davies, 1969).
It was one of the great surprises of modern planetary science that fluvial valleys were discovered on the planet Mars by study of the vidicon images returned by the Mariner 9 spacecraft (Masursky, 1973). From the much more extensive coverage of the Viking mission we know that the heavily cratered Martian highlands are locally dissected by networks of tributary valleys with widths of 10 km or less and lengths of a few kilometers to nearly 1000 km. These valley networks are one major type of large elongate Martian troughs thought to have fluvial origins (Baker, 1982).
In distinction from fluvial valleys, large outflow channels show extensive evidence of large-scale fluid flow on their floors and walls (Baker et al., 1992a), so technically speaking they are channels, rather than valleys. This is a rather curious circumstance, since Earth experience leads us to suppose that fluvial channels are invariably much smaller than fluvial valleys. However, the Martian outflow channels may arise from the peculiar geological history of Mars and its water endowment (Baker et al. 1991).
